Why it’s important to own the top rank on Google

Google Traffic Distribution per CTR

Hi Richard, Thanks for the great example graph of Googs rankings CTR. Can I ask where you sourced this data graph from? Doesn’t quite give you enough info. I presume its been plotted using data thats been gathered from multiple sources, externally from Google.

It took a long time but Google webmaster tools providing analytics that was previously unobtainable, is a fantastic benifit to any webmaster looking to improve their CTR in the Google SERPs. The data, such as, keyword search impressions, Clicks on your listing and the CTR for each keyword. It has amazed me how the listings CTR can increase by 10% – 15% from a position just one ranking higher. Here is an example from my stats.
This is for one 3 word keyphrase for a time period of 30 days. Obviously the ranking for that page wasnt very stable but this gives the best data.

Rank Impressions Clicks CTR%
1 170 73 43%
2 2,400 590 25%
3 480 73 15%
4 1,300 210 16%
5 1,000 140 14%
6 to 10 390 36 9%

Total
ave 3.3 5,530 920 19%

So this goes to show, no webmaster should be content with a first page ranking, top 3 should be the only target.
